Washington Highway 9, Accident Crash, Snohomish, News: high speed collision shuts down SR 9 in Snohomish, Community Questions Rises
According to officials from Snohomish County Fire District, the crash occurred at approximately 7:24 p.m. near the intersection of State Route 9, Bonneville Avenue, and 16th Street. Emergency crews were dispatched shortly after multiple reports came in describing a violent two-vehicle collision with significant damage and people believed to be trapped inside the wreckage.
Firefighters arrived on scene within minutes and found both vehicles extensively damaged in the front from the force of the impact. Authorities confirmed that both drivers were still inside their vehicles and unable to exit due to the severity of the crash.
Rescue teams immediately began extrication efforts using specialized hydraulic tools, commonly referred to as the “jaws of life,” to carefully remove one of the trapped drivers. Officials reported that the rescue operation took around 17 minutes as firefighters worked cautiously to free the individual while trying to prevent further injury.
Both drivers sustained serious injuries in the collision, and officials confirmed that one of them suffered life-threatening injuries. After being stabilized at the scene by paramedics, both individuals were transported to Providence Medical Center in Everett for urgent medical treatment.
The crash forced a full shutdown of State Route 9 in both directions as emergency responders worked at the scene. Traffic in the surrounding area quickly became heavily congested, with law enforcement officers redirecting vehicles and advising drivers to avoid the affected stretch of highway.
The Washington State Patrol has since taken over the investigation into what caused the collision. Investigators remained on site for several hours documenting evidence, examining vehicle positions, and working to reconstruct the events leading up to the crash.
Preliminary information from officials suggests that alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the incident. However, authorities have not yet released further details regarding potential impairment, nor have they confirmed whether any charges will be filed at this stage of the investigation.
Witnesses in the area described seeing a heavy emergency presence, with flashing lights illuminating the roadway as firefighters and paramedics worked urgently to assist the trapped victims. Many drivers experienced long delays as the highway remained closed while crews conducted rescue and investigative operations.
State Route 9 stayed closed for an extended period Saturday night as authorities cleared the wreckage and continued their on-scene investigation. Motorists were urged to find alternate routes until the roadway could be safely reopened.
Officials emphasized that the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of high-speed driving and the potentially devastating consequences of impaired or reckless behavior on the road. They continue to encourage all drivers to remain alert, follow speed limits, and make safe choices behind the wheel.
As the investigation continues, additional updates regarding the victims’ conditions and the circumstances surrounding the crash are expected to be released once confirmed by authorities.
For now, the Snohomish community remains focused on the recovery of those injured, while also expressing appreciation for the quick and coordinated response from firefighters, paramedics, and law enforcement who worked under difficult and urgent conditions to provide critical aid at the scene.
