Melvin Jerome Sterling Lawson, 41, Vehicle Crash, Spotsylvania, Westmoreland County, Death Obituary: Community Mourns
A 41-year-old Spotsylvania County man was killed in a single-vehicle ATV crash Saturday night in Westmoreland County, according to Virginia State Police.
The crash occurred on May 16, 2026, along Rose Tucker Road near Tucker Hill Road. Authorities said the victim, identified as Melvin Jerome-Sterling Lawson, was operating a 2022 Can-Am Renegade ATV when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.
Emergency responders arrived at approximately 8:12 p.m. following reports of the crash. Despite life-saving efforts by first responders, Lawson was pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles were involved.
Virginia State Police confirmed that speed was a contributing factor in the crash. Investigators also noted that Lawson was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident. Toxicology testing and a full crash reconstruction remain ongoing.
Preliminary findings suggest the ATV veered off the roadway under unclear circumstances. Investigators are examining whether road conditions, driver control, or other environmental factors may have contributed to the crash. The vehicle sustained significant front-end damage consistent with a high-impact collision.
The roadway was closed for several hours while investigators documented evidence and cleared debris from the scene. The ATV has been taken for mechanical inspection as part of the ongoing investigation.
Lawson, originally from Spotsylvania County, was known to family and friends as an experienced rider and hardworking community member. Loved ones are now mourning his sudden passing and remembering his life beyond the circumstances of the crash.
Officials have not released additional details regarding the investigation, and no charges have been filed. Authorities say the case remains active as they work to determine the exact sequence of events leading up to the collision.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
Virginia State Police are urging anyone with information about the crash to contact investigators as the inquiry continues.
