Imani Ringgold, 20, West Philadelphia, Shooting, Pizza as Hamza Ruley: In Loving Memory

Pennsylvania — The heartbreaking death of 20-year-old Imani Ringgold has left family members, friends, and the West Philadelphia community grieving a young life taken far too soon in what police believe was a shooting intended for someone else.

According to investigators, Imani had recently begun working as a home health aide and was simply making her way home after work on April 7 when tragedy struck. Police said she had stopped to buy food and was walking near the 5900 block of Market Street with a pizza box in her hand around 6:20 p.m. when gunfire suddenly erupted nearby.

Authorities said a black Mazda SUV pulled up near a group of people before three men exited the vehicle and began firing multiple shots. In the chaos, Imani Ringgold was struck by gunfire along with two other individuals — a 23-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman.

Imani later died from her injuries, while the other two victims survived and were reported to be in stable condition. Police have stated that the surviving victims were innocent bystanders, and the shooting itself is believed to have targeted someone else.

For those who knew Imani, the loss is devastating beyond words. At just 20 years old, she was beginning a new chapter of life and work, building a future for herself while caring for others through her role as a home health aide. Loved ones now mourn not only the person she was, but also the dreams, milestones, and opportunities that were stolen from her in an instant.

The details surrounding her final moments have deeply affected many across Philadelphia. A young woman carrying dinner after finishing work should have been able to return home safely. Instead, her family was left facing unimaginable grief because of violence that police say was never meant for her.

Community members have continued sharing condolences, prayers, and frustration over the ongoing toll of gun violence and the innocent lives caught in its path. Residents in West Philadelphia expressed sorrow and anger that another young person with her whole life ahead of her became the victim of senseless violence.

As investigators continue searching for those responsible, loved ones are holding tightly to memories of Imani’s kindness, ambition, and caring spirit. Though her life ended tragically and far too soon, those closest to her hope she will be remembered for the life she lived, the compassion she showed others, and the love she brought to the people around her.

Imani Ringgold’s memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
