Centaurus High School in Lafayette, Colorado, was placed under a precautionary safety response today after school officials and law enforcement responded to reported threat concerns affecting the campus and surrounding schools.
According to the Boulder Valley School District, Centaurus High School, along with at least one additional school in the district, was placed in a “HOLD” status while authorities investigated reports received earlier in the day. District officials later indicated that preliminary assessment suggested the alerts may have been related to “swatting” incidents — false reports made with the intent of triggering a large-scale emergency response from law enforcement.
School administrators and law enforcement agencies acted quickly to ensure the safety of students and staff. Officers were dispatched to the campus, where they coordinated with school officials, conducted security assessments, and worked to determine whether any credible threat existed. As part of the response, movement within the school was restricted while normal classroom instruction continued.
Officials emphasized that a “HOLD” is a precautionary measure distinct from a full lockdown. During a HOLD, students remain inside classrooms with doors secured, and hallway activity is temporarily paused. Unlike a lockdown, which is used when there is an immediate and confirmed threat inside the building, a HOLD is typically implemented when there is a potential external concern that requires investigation without disrupting instruction more than necessary.
Parents and guardians were notified through the district’s emergency communication system and advised to avoid coming to campus while law enforcement handled the situation. Authorities also urged the public to rely on official updates, noting that early reports during active incidents can often be incomplete or unverified.
Law enforcement officials are currently working to trace the origin of the reported threats, including reviewing digital communication records and any related tips or calls received. Investigators are also assessing whether similar reports have been made to other schools, as swatting incidents have been a growing concern in school districts nationwide.
