Authorities in Ohio are investigating a devastating head-on collision that occurred Saturday morning in Perry Township along U.S. Route 62, a crash that claimed two lives and left a juvenile passenger seriously injured.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the collision happened around 7:15 a.m. near milepost 11 when a northbound vehicle driven by 21-year-old Cole Scholey reportedly crossed left of center for reasons still under investigation and entered the southbound lane. There, it collided head-on with a 2021 Honda Odyssey driven by 56-year-old Kelly Kemp.
Officials said the impact was extremely violent, causing catastrophic damage to both vehicles. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and confirmed that Kelly Kemp was pronounced dead at the location due to the severity of her injuries.
Cole Scholey sustained critical injuries in the crash and was transported to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital, where he later died despite medical efforts to save his life.
A juvenile passenger traveling in Kemp’s vehicle also suffered serious injuries and was taken to Aultman Hospital for urgent treatment. Authorities have not released further details regarding the child’s condition.
Investigators noted that neither driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. Speed is also believed to be a contributing factor, although officials emphasized that the exact circumstances leading to the crash remain under active investigation.
Troopers continue to examine physical evidence from the scene, including vehicle positioning, roadway markings, and witness statements, as they work to reconstruct the moments leading up to the fatal impact.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol stated that the investigation remains ongoing as officials seek to fully determine what caused the vehicle to cross into oncoming traffic during what has become a tragic morning on U.S. Route 62.
